The Top 5 red wine of the month clubs for gifts
Last updated: July 22, 2013
Yay for red wine club gifts! We’re all about giving 3-month wine subscriptions—or for your nearest and dearest, a 12-month wine club subscription. While most wine clubs offer “red wine only” versions of their month clubs, sometimes we pick out clubs that only come in red as they usually offer a little something extra for the red wine aficionado. This lets us really focus on your choices that really deserve the title of best red wine club gift.
The lowest price options in monthly wine gifts are 2-bottle clubs, but when you want to make a big statement with more wine, there are still great choices in 3-, 4-, 6-, and even 12-bottle clubs. We’ve highlight the clubs with the best gift packaging and gift announcements (including last-minute gifts), in addition to the best wines and the best customer service. Oh, and don’t forget the wine education! Part of a great wine of the month club gift is a superlative newsletter which helps the recipient learn more about the wine they’re drinking.

Get a Free Professional Corkscrew (it's our favorite) with your first shipment (a $20 value).
Overview: Featuring hand-picked, adventurous selections from around the world. Great value and great drinking in every shipment.
What We Love: Industry-leading customer service, no ho-hum selections allowed, always over-delivers on value, and it's a great wine club for foodies.
Could Be Better: As this wine club continues to add more benefits like a satisfaction guarantee, discounts on reorders, partnerships to enhance their wine pairing, and more choices for customization, we only have praise for Plonk.
Overview: Love red wine? This is one of the better wine clubs for sampling red wines only. You can get nearly any wine club as red-only, but we like clubs focusing on red wine specifically for true red wine devotees.
What We Love: Cellars Wine Club is a (mostly) green company. They use earth-friendly packaging that is 100% recyclable.
Could Be Better: We'd like a better understanding of how they select their wines. We know some of what they've selected, but not anything about why.
Overview: A unique opportunity to sample hard-to-find, high-end wines at everyday prices. No other premium wine club comes close.
What We Love: We love that Paul streams his wine-tasting sessions live over the Internet so we can see what he's tasting and how much he's rejected.
Could Be Better: No recommendations for improvement here. This wine club sets the bar high as a standard for all other wine clubs.
Overview: Three-bottle a month red wine clubs are unusual but are just the thing for a red-wine lover. This one delivers great value, too.
What We Love: WineExpress is the retail arm of Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Who better to select the best wines for a wine of the month club than a company that rates wine?
Could Be Better: We'd like to see some updated "Previous Selections" on each of the wine clubs. The ones listed are a little out of date.
Overview: The most popular varietal for single-varietal wine clubs is probably Pinot Noir but none of the other wine clubs come with the precedent of quality set by Gold Medal Wine Club.
What We Love: They seek out truly special Pinot Noir selections from California and around the world. Pinot Noir is a very fussy grape and we're happy to have them do the legwork for us.
Could Be Better: We don't have any suggestions for what to improve within the Pinot Noir Series wine club. Yay!
