Le Metro Wine Subscription Review

by WineClubReviews.net
Le Metro Wine Subscription Shipment

When you open a bottle of wine, or taste something new at a restaurant, do you sniff, swirl, and swish it around your palate to discover as much as you can about what the wine has to offer? Do you ask to see the bottle, sneak research junkets on your phone under the table? Reminisce about the last time you had a wine of that varietal or from that region? Check another box on your Century Club list?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, this is the "wine club" for you.

Le Metro (Wine. Underground.) doesn't want us to call their box of joy a "wine club" because for them, it's a work of art. They want people to feel like they're receiving something special every time a shipment arrives, whether it's monthly or quarterly. After receiving four impressive shipments from them, we can't really disagree.

Review of the First Shipment

Le Metro Artwork - Volume VI

I was a bit like a kid on Christmas morning, because I'd never seen a box of wine quite like this one.

Inside this box of grown-up juice were six exquisite Pinot Noirs from places I know and love, and places I had no idea make Pinot Noir. There was a quote in the literature—an impressive display of graphic design prowess—that sounded like something I would say, if I knew more about French wine than I do.

Contrary to popular belief, there is really no one representative style of Pinot. Burgundyphiles expect finesse, high acid, and noticeable tannins, while many Californians seek ripeness of fruit and the immediate gratification that accompanies it. In the middle you've got countless variations. I like to think that for an open-minded wine drinker there's a lot to learn by exploring all of the available styles.

And explore I did.

If you are looking for an exciting, engaging, high-quality wine subscription... this is the one for you. It's art, pure and simple. It's educated and educational. And it makes THE PERFECT WINE GIFT for your oenophile friends and family.

P.S. Everywhere you look there's charm in this wine club. I hadn't noticed the numbering on the back of the bottles when they arrived, but even this little detail just adds to the overall experience. Collect your empties like trophies!

Le Metro Wine Subscription Ratings

At WineClubReviews.net we take an objective approach to our star ratings system. Our written reviews are very much subjective, based on our 5+ years of wine club review experience and our own ideas about what good wine and good value mean. The star ratings are based on 11 attributes that we feel define what a wine club should be. Here is how Le Metro Wine Subscription stacks up on these traits.

Satisfaction Guarantee -

Note: This rating is our objective analysis of Le Metro’s satisfaction guarantee—not our assessment of whether or not you’re guaranteed to be satisfied with their wines.

You won't find the information on their website, but they've assured us they offer a 100% guarantee. They want you to love your wine, so if you get something that sucks (unpossible!) or a bottle gone bad, just give 'em a call and they'll take care of it.

Quality of Wine -

The wines from Le Metro are exceptional. We reserve 5-star quality ratings for wines that retail over $50 and should represent the sublime, so 4.5 stars is a pretty great rating for wines priced under $30 per bottle.

Price of Wine -

As always, we spot-check a few of the wines we receive from any club to see if their pricing is advantageous to their members. Our usual survey turned up good pricing. In some cases you're paying retail, but often you're getting a deal.

Uniqueness of the Wine Club -

A truly unique wine club that focuses on art and culture—the "Zine" each month features a custom artwork and each shipment comes with a hand-numbered print (which makes them collectible pieces of art). Other wine clubs offer adventures in each shipment, but none quite like this one. It feeds your inner wine connoisseur AND your intellect.

Wine Education -

There's an industry standard in wine club education and it goes something like this: tell us about the wine, the winemaker, the region and offer up a food-pairing recipe. The content is usually provided by the winery or the region's PR firm. It comes in varying degrees of print quality from black and white letter-size paper to 40-page catalog.

The approach offered by Le Metro is different (sort of). You get an editorial description of the wine highlighting the experience of drinking the wine, an explanation of why it's in the shipment, a bit about the region and a bit about the winemaker. Also, you get a short essay on the purpose of the shipment which is usually chock full of more wine knowledge tidbits. All of these elements come together to produce a more complete wine picture for the drinker.

Personalization -

There is no personalization at Le Metro. This is intentional, as each shipment is curated to tell a story and breaking up the shipments or making personalizations would change the story (and the artwork). Normally we think a lack of personalization is a bad thing, but after each shipment our confidence in Le Metro's ability to pick great wines and make great wine adventures continues to rise.

If you're not an adventurous-enough wine drinker to try whatever comes your way (red, white, rose, bubbly, sweet, etc.) then this isn't the club for you.

Discount Opportunities -

We look at three areas when evaluating the discount opportunities offered by a wine club. Is there an introductory offer to sweeten the deal? Are there discounts available for buying more of wines you loved in your shipments? Are there special discounts only available to members?

Le Metro is not a discount-oriented wine club. Their primary focus is on pairing wine with art and culture. As such, they're not especially concerned about offering value beyond what's in the box.

When you reorder wine from Le Metro, you’re paying the same price per bottle you paid in your shipment—usually a good deal, but not an additional discount.

Currently there are no members-only deals and no introductory offer.

Convenience -

When we evaluate the convenience of a particular wine club, we're looking at how easy it is to manage your account. If all changes to the account require a phone call or email to customer support, we give the wine club an average 3 stars. All wine clubs are more convenient than buying at a local store, but some wine clubs offer even more convenience than that.

Le Metro offers online account management and sends out an email 10 days before the shipment will go out in case you need to make changes.

Customer Service Record -

Le Metro has a very personalized customer service regimen—what you want or need, you get. We have never received a complaint regarding their customer service and didn't find any elsewhere online either.

Curation Process -

This is where Le Metro truly shines—in the top three curated wine clubs we've ever reviewed. Each shipment is curated to tell a story around a particular theme. Each wine selected supports that theme, either by demonstrating typical varieties from a region, unexpected varieties from a region you thought you knew, compare/contrast for different wine regions, etc.

Giftworthiness -

Hands down, if you know an adventurous wine drinker, this is your number one gift choice. The shipments are a fun feast for the eyes and the art-loving soul.
